Walking into the international terminal at LAX immediately slapped with the realization that this trip is actually happening. The terminal is a large open area, similar to in size to several jet hangars. The openness led to the overall chaotic feeling. People were strewn about, in a giant mass. I'd love to say that there was "controlled" chaos, but really it was madness -- people sleeping on the floor, tables, and chairs; it was crazy. Definitely an interesting vibe and some seriously interesting people watching. I'd say that there were several thousand people there, about 90% of which were Asian.
As I worked to deliver you a blog entry, three high school aged European kids (Portugese, maybe??) sat across from me and downloaded classic American rock songs and hilariously sang them in accented glee. Definitely put a grin on my face.
Qantas was a solid experience. I got incredibly lucky -- though the flight was half to 2/3 full, my four person row (there were three sections -- a 3 person, a 4 person in the middle, and another 3 person) was shared only between a girl from Boston and me. This enabled me to stretch out and fully enjoy the Qantas safety video introduction from John Travolta (wtf??) that played on the small screen in the headrest in front of me.
We had movies / TV shows / games / music on demand that was nice, and the food was actually good (the mahi mahi was delicious). We had two full meals and several snacks, with my favorite being the unfortunately, yet somehow appropriately named, "Moose Munch."
On the downside, it was f#@$% cold on the plane, and I was wrapped up in two blankets / cloaks Gaddafi style. All I needed was some clown hair and bulbous nose, and I would've been a dead ringer for him. Perhaps that will be my disguise in Sydney to avoid the paparazzi.
Overall, it was as pleasant an experience as a ~ 15 hour flight can be. I slept for at least 8 hours of it, though I think I'm a certified contortionist now...
