A Word on Thai Food

Anyone who has eaten regularly with me knows that I'm not a huge fan of Thai in the States, and one of my concerns about coming to SE Asia was the food.  I couldn't have been more mistaken, and I'm not afraid to admit it.  The food here is AMAZING.  I had been dining quite a bit with the street vendors -- whatever random meat I've been eating has been delicious.

Two nights ago, I hit up a seafood place where I ordered a plate that had four different types of calamari for $8 -- WTF??  The grilled was the best, but the others weren't bad, either.  I did have my first "Bangkok food experience" as this dish did tear apart my stomach.  I'm blaming it on ordering food in the red light district.  Ya can't win 'em all, I suppose...

Last night, I grabbed a "snack" from a street vendor that turned out to be the best $1 soup I can remember eating.  I ordered "seafood in a tomato sauce," and naturally, here's what I got (whatever it was, it was dee-lite-ful.  The meatball looking things were either scallops or mussels; there was also other bits of tempura, soy beans, and other random goodness.  This was served over a bed of noodles (that are hiding at the bottom of the dish):

Finally, last night, I stumbled into a random restaurant that was situated in one of the random alleyways.  The alleyways lie all over the place, and I'm not sure if I'm walking into a hooker lair (like what happened the day before yesterday -- the hookers were so aggressive that I literally drug one 5 yards because she wouldn't let go of my arm), or into a delicious food den (like I did last night).  Here's what the place looked like:

I ordered what sounded a little plain -- seafood stir fry, but, it was incredible!  I was shocked at how good it tasted.  It was a medley of shrimp, scallops, and other things I'm not sure were seafood, but they went down well.  Seeing at how this was a restaurant, it was a bit pricey -- $5.

That's it for now; I'm getting hungry again, just thinking about this food.  I guess what amazes me is how good and cheap everything is -- it's in stark contrast to Sydney where I couldn't find a decent brekkie for under $15; and most places averaged in the $20-30 range for lunch and dinner (we're not talking anything special, either); and drinks on the cheap were $8 and on the high $15.
