Ok -- more negative news keeps coming out of Tokyo. The latest I read stated that now radiation levels in Tokyo have increased "slightly" (though they're still in the "acceptable" range -- if you believe that). Additionally, the weather has contributed to knock out some of the train infrastructure.
I'm now seriously considering changing my plans, but I'm looking for some viewer participation. Here are my thoughts -- I really want to go to Tokyo, and based upon an amazing blog from Andrea (she went there last year), there would be tons of insanely crazy things to experience.
Obviously, the crisis there hasn't improved much over the past few days. I've checked into some places off the Thailand coast, and there are spots available for roughly the same amount that I would've paid in Tokyo. I haven't checked with American Airlines yet, but I'm assuming that it won't be a big deal to re-route my flight. Qantas (the airline I used to get to Sydney) flies directly to Bangkok, and then I'd figure some way to get down to the coast. I'd stay on the coast for a week and then head back to Bangkok for the remainder of my time.
So now, we get to the viewer participation part -- I've added a poll to the right side of the blog; let me know what you think. I'm interested in hearing your opinions. If I do decide to change the flight, I'll need to do it soon, so I have only allowed 1 day for you to give me your feedback.
Hey Marc,
ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of things to investigate in Thailand and for CHEAP. If you go south to the beaches, go to the Pi Pi islands -- the scenery is BEYOND AMAZING and the seafood awesome!!! Bangkok is like all 18 million+ cities in Asia...blue air, tons of motorcycles, but fabulous Thai food, and lots of ancient relics to visit...Golden Palace is a must as is the crocodile farm. If radiation is the primary concern, consider that you're what, 34-36 and probably going to go bald in the next 5-7 years anyway. And because there's small likelihood of you having children, the birth defect thing is a non-issue.
ReplyDeleteRadiation aside, go volunteer. I'm assuming there's some folks that could use a hand that have been transplanted temporarily to Tokyo or thereabouts. Do something good - help them. The language of love is universal.
